Have anyone considered using CUDA [1] for video coding?
It seems to work quite well for these type of tasks, especially
when the work can be parallelized.
I haven't looked very much in to it (mostly because i don't
own a sufficient graphics-card; nvidia 8600+) but ideas that
comes to mind are stuff such as motion-estimation searching
and video post processing.
