I have obviously been too enthusiastic about asf.c. I will leave it to
those who know it better and concentrate on the MMS protocol.

Again, my apologies. I have now also subscribed to ffmpeg-cvs to avoid
missing future documentation updates. I just realised that I somehow
missed the current thread regarding preroll and duration. I can only
hope that my stupidity is temporary and that it is curable with a few
good nights' sleep.
