If it's the same problem as I'm thinking of (and I already tried to fix
once):

Yes.

> do they work with mplayer + libavcodec?

In the same way as ffplay, they play but at (much) worse quality that the
binary codecs.
If you have samples that behave worse than just playing with bad quality
I'd be interested.

Before my "fix" the now just worse-quality parts would just not be
decoded at all.
