I am still unable to reproduce the segfault, but by simply reading my
own patch I can see the amount of my idiocy... The patch was _very_
wrong. I do not know why windows segfaulted and linux did not.

I attach a correct version of the patch, maybe this will fix the
segfault you are seeing.
