:) I think I recall a discussion about having AVOptions per codec. But,
I do not think that thread reached a consensus. It is similar in the
sense that someone made the remark in the previous thread, that someone
would have to keep those structures up to date, and even initially
someone would have to check which options make sense for which codecs.
The same would have to happen for setting such per codec defaults. Not
that I think that it would _not_ be a good idea to have per codec
defaults, as they could be a bit more sane/specific. Although... their
are other (probably more important even) factors which determine what 
settings to choose, such as the intended use (network streaming, DVD
backup, ...).
