Well maybe it was not needed back then. Nowdays, broadcast industry is
going to that direction (sdi is 10 bit since a long time now), and I
expect 10 bit to be a standard for broadcast ingest (not diffusion) in
some years in H264 (exposed during last SMPTE meeting in june), not to
mention DNxHD for editing.

There should be industrial enc/decoders (jp2k ones) at least using 12
bits. (Orca dcp encoders, Doremi d-cinema playout servers).

Doesn't jasper support >8 bit ?
