Nope. I just tested, to confirm my memory of a different failure, and I
have MP4 files which play just fine with MPlayer's default demuxer but
which actually *crash* with the libavformat demuxer. (Compiling with
debugging symbols now, will check for existing bug report and/or file
new one in due time unless someone says not to bother or I forget about
it.)
