I don't know what this does, but without it (and as non-root, which is
how I run my configures/compiles), another datapoint:

(Naturally, this was with no other significant disk access going on at
the time, which is not always the case when I compile.)

Athlon XP 2200+ here, with disks chosen for data capacity and virtually
zero priority given to speed (which doesn't mean that they're the
world's slowest, just that they're not especially fast) - and as you can
see, it did indeed take significantly longer.
