So, incremental improvements working toward that goal
won't be applied? e.g. splitting into patches like:

[PATCH1] Configure fails on Mac OS X Intel
[PATCH2] Processor optimization on Mac OS X
[PATCH3] #nop illegal for old versions of GAS
[PATCH4] binary constants illegal for old versions of GAS

Sorry. Only joined the mailing list yesterday,

I will look to see what you said about this in the past,
but what about configure detecting the version of GAS,
and incompatible files including i386/gas_fixes.h ?
(analogous to ppc/gcc_fixes.h)
