And it's very reasonable to have such a unit be a standard type, but I
still don't think it makes much sense to call it "char" when it
apparently has nothing to do with character data as such.

Not that my opinion is going to have much of an effect on anything else,
of course - but that fact also doesn't have much of an effect on my
opinion.
