Sorry, I think that this choice is poor, Rich pointed already that is 
WAY simpler just run for each interesting arch the build system and then 
glue the arches in a single binary. I'd trade some script/makefile 
additions to a large complication in code (old and new) and obviously 
untrackable side effects...

That said, again I'm just a minor contributor to the project so I don't 
have much voice, but still I think that the proposed solution isn't optimal.
