You can actually chnage the mapping in the registry ("just" search for
COM<whatever> and you will find it).
Seems to be the only way to make as USB-Serial converter use COM1 (some
stupid programs need that and my laptop does not have any COM1 without
such a manual hack).

Or if you have a lot of time to waste and want a few more Windows
"usability" stories to tell ;-)
