Mans, I thank you much for taking time to help with this, and I
apologize that the problem was apparently something not related to
FFmpeg.
I can no longer reproduce the problem. I have no idea what was causing
this, or what "fixed" it. well, I did reboot a few times, but how
that changed the bahaviour of one particular function is beyond me.
and how booting memtest86 did not make a difference either? must have
been some strange EM interference here in Oregon last week, I suppose?!?
