That's one of the main selling points of subversion.  It's a drop-in
replacement for CVS.

This is not true.  As long as the patches still apply there is no
problem.  If they don't apply you can recover until revision x, commit
revision x+1 by hand or make the repository otherwise accept revision
x+2 and continue.  Trust me, I have recovered a repository in this way.
