thanks for the quick response billy.
i just started the steps i posted over from scratch, this time:
(a) replacing step 3 with this:
./configure --disable-amr_nb-fixed --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_wb
--disable-altivec
(b) skipping the changes to the amr makefile (as it wasn't called for this time)
i still get errors
