I've used courier-imap and courier-imap-ssl for a couple years. I can't
really say if courier is better or worse than anything else; I haven't
had any trouble with it at all, though.

Another popular one is cyrus; I switched from cyrus to courier because I
wanted to use Maildirs and (at least at the time) cyrus didn't support them.
