Sure, as long as you don't try anything unusual.
Like try to decode with decoder A and then switch to decoder B if that failed.

So? Not all applications have to care about 64 bytes per packet.
They could probably save more by switching their malloc implementation.
I don't see the point of a good API as finding the most complicated way of doing
something and forcing everyone to use it because 1% of the users might
need that complicated way.
