Quite old in contrast to the above debian_version though, which says it
is not a released stable version.

IIRC when I checked the feasibility of using -std=c99 earlier a problem
with kernel types not getting defined was one of the reasons I
determined trying to use it for MPlayer would not be worth the trouble
and gnu99 would be a better choice. I think this is the same problem. I
don't remember the details though (that was quite a while ago, long
before -std=gnu99 was actually added to MPlayer build flags). It was
some problem with the headers behaving like strict C89 (with no 64-bit
types) under #defines set by -std=c99.
