vim 7.x offers spell checking as well, that is what I use.

I think bashing is an exaggeration, I just think that Michael
underestimates the effect of this stuff (and possibly overestimates the
effort for avoiding it).
I actually do not care much about misspellings, having a '.' at the end
and an uppercase letter at the start of a sentence, 'I' written in
uppercase and a few ',' in really long sentences would be fully
sufficient for me I think.

It is a bit annoying to write with German keyboards, I agree. Writing
"do not" avoids that though ;-)
I personally dislike the "dont" spelling because I most of the time
interpret it as French at first...
