Hmmmmm.  What codecs.conf entry are you using for MPlayer?

With ffplay I get gray "unpainted" backgrounds with
VS2k5DebugDemo-01.avi and 2.w2003-linux.avi.

For gui_movie.avi I get only a quarter of the image in the lower right,
the following message

[VMware video @ 0x1036712c]Premature end of data!

and no playback.

test.avi appears to be working fine.
