Reply delayed by holiday (bothersome things, holidays :-)):
Michael, thanks for doing this change, it will additionnally help a lot
in code of mine where a stream is opened *after* the codec.
IMHO breaking binary compatibility big time just once, for the sake of
future perpetual binary compatibility, is a good thing.
