I'm not 100% sure anymore, but wasn't it so that playing a title with
dvdnav resulted in playing the title plus the next title in the chain
(usually the menu), but using -dumpstream only the title was dumped and
then exited?
If so, this functionality is only a mplayer one (IIRC in earlier times
-dumpstream on dvdnav did deliver a huge output stream of e.g. the main
menu playing again and again), but this is not anymore the case, but it
might well be that the dumping features of VLC do not offer this.
