At the very least it is a pain to make work on MinGW, though that does
not speak against using it by default, I just very much would prefer to
have a fallback check and the pkg-config result being checked as well -
I have enough "painful" memories due to broken/unmaintained/wrong .pc
files (esp. commands for static linking are very, very often broken).
