I hate autocrap too.
I don't claim to be an Makefile nor a shell script expert,
but here is something that seems to work for me (at least on my
linux system)

I've borrowed the some of the configure stuff and version.sh from
ffmpeg's build system.

It's not cleaned up nor finalized, but is at least a start if
no one else comes up with something superior to this.
