It sounds like the new protection scheme from Sony. You need to
recompile mplayer with the SVN version of dvdnav from the mplayer site:

svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/dvdnav/trunk/libdvdnav

and access it through dvdnav:// instead of dvd://.
