As far as I know from my card (saa7134 card=9) mplayer fails to unmute the 
card. Two ways of getting it unmuted:

start xawtv and the 'killall -9 xawtv' not very elegant
better use 'v4lctl volume mute off'

and after those just use mplayer to watch the picture to the sound.
