The vesa when " -menu " options it sets from the mode, the MPEG-1 file is not execution measuring. The place test with MPEG-1 and avi file, only, it wants knowing the reason where the MPEG-1 file does not become execution. 
ex) ./mplayer -vo vesa -menu movie.mpg
