i've been encoding some of my dvd's recently with the following
commands:

mencoder rip.avi -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1000:vpass=1:vhq -sws 2 -vop
scale=640:272,crop=718:360:0:58 -o rip-compressed.avi

mencoder rip.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=96 -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1000:vpass=2:vhq -sws 2 -vop
scale=640:272,crop=718:360:0:58 -o rip-compressed.avi

and the resulting file looks really nice, and sounds really nice...in
linux. but in windows it only plays the audio.

does anyone know why this is so? does Windows Media Player 7 not have
the appropriate codec to decode the video portion of my rips?

if it helps, here is the output i get when playing the file in linux
with mplayer:

[upgrdman at farrell upgrdman]$ mplayer my\ files/dvd-rips/Independence\
Day.avi
