[Mplayer-users] Performance dropped significantly for unknown reason...

I've noticed recently that mplayer has been running much slower on my system than it used to when using the DirectShow codec at -pp 4, and even -pp 3. I didn't used to get this message:

************************************************************************
** Your system is too SLOW to play this! try with -framedrop or RTFM! **
************************************************************************

Now, I figured it might be the current version of mplayer, so I downgraded to v0.18pre3, which I had kicking around. This also has the same problem.

I'm running a PIII-850, which is more than powerful enough to play a regular DivX at the highest DirectShow quality. I'm wondering what's gone wrong. I'm using the same video driver (xv) with my geforce256-DDR and binary nvidia drivers. I upgraded the kernel a few times recently (was running 2.4.5 for a long time, now i'm doing 2.4.9)... that might be a cause.

Can anyone suggest any possibilities as to what could be bottlenecking mplayer?

Thanks.
